This antique copperplate engraving presents a vivid arrangement of exotic tropical fish from the waters surrounding the Moluccas (Spice Islands) in present-day Indonesia. Shown in two registers against idealized coastal landscapes, the composition highlights a variety of species including angelfish, trumpetfish, and boxfish, numbered and arranged with scientific curiosity. The work originates from Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (Old and New East Indies), Valentijn’s monumental account of Dutch colonial exploration in Southeast Asia.

The engraving was executed by Jan Goeree and engraved by Caspar Luyken or possibly Christoffel Elliger, who contributed to the rich illustrative program of the publication. These images are among the earliest European scientific attempts to document Indo-Pacific marine biodiversity in visual form.
