4868 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Larch and Fungus on Bark (Larix, Agaricus Terebrantium) – Original Hand-Coloured Mezzotint from Phytanthoza Iconographia – Dutch Edition (1736–1748)
This detailed botanical mezzotint features several parts of the Larix (larch) tree, including its foliage, cones, and bark, as well as the fungal organism Agaricus terebrantium, depicted growing upon the trunk. The image shows fine textural variation and naturalistic colouration of the bark surface and fungal body, rendered with meticulous detail. Numbered “No. 627” in the upper right, the plate originates from the Dutch-language edition of Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s Phytanthoza Iconographia, one of the great early botanical publishing achievements of the 18th century.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and pioneering botanical illustrator whose Phytanthoza Iconographia set a new benchmark in scientific printmaking. Using colour-printed mezzotint engraving on a vast scale, his plates offered an unprecedented combination of accuracy and visual richness. The Dutch edition, issued in Amsterdam by Zacharias Romberg, remains particularly prized among collectors.
