4866 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Delphinium / Consolida regia – Original Hand-Coloured Mezzotint from Phytanthoza Iconographia – Dutch Edition (1736–1748)

This exquisite botanical mezzotint depicts several forms of Consolida regia (Royal Larkspur), rendered in full colour with remarkable delicacy. The varieties shown include pale pink, violet, and double-flowered forms, labelled as flore pallido, flore rubro, and flore roseo pleno. Designated “No. 410” in the upper corner, the plate comes from the Dutch-language edition of Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s monumental Phytanthoza Iconographia, one of the first major botanical works to employ colour-printed mezzotint techniques on a grand scale.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose pioneering combination of mezzotint engraving and colour printing set a new standard for botanical illustration in the 18th century. His multivolume Phytanthoza Iconographia featured over 1,000 plates and influenced generations of botanical artists. The Dutch edition, published in Amsterdam by Zacharias Romberg, remains highly sought after for its clarity, artistry, and technical innovation.
