This engraving by Giacomo Lauro depicts a theatrical reconstruction of the Naumachia Neronis, the grand basin allegedly built by Emperor Nero for staging naval battles in ancient Rome. The elliptical structure is shown filled with water, where multiple ships engage in a staged maritime conflict before a seated audience. Architectural details include arcaded galleries, an entrance portal, and an elaborate central tribunal. The dramatic motion of the water and ships captures the Roman fascination with spectacle and imperial display. Below, a Latin inscription offers historical commentary and literary references. Plate number “37” marks its position within Lauro’s architectural series.

Giacomo Lauro was an Italian engraver active in Rome, best known for Antiquae Urbis Splendor, a celebrated suite of imagined reconstructions of ancient Roman monuments. Intended to glorify the lost grandeur of classical architecture, these engravings blend archaeological interest with artistic license and served as a key visual resource for early modern antiquarians and travelers.
