This architectural engraving by Giacomo Lauro depicts a reconstructed view of the Theatrum Pompeii Magni (Theatre of Pompey the Great), the first permanent stone theatre in ancient Rome. The structure is presented in a cutaway elevation, revealing the curving auditorium, columnar arcades, and stage complex, flanked by a towering statue of Pompey. The illustration is accompanied by a Latin inscription recounting the historical and political importance of the site, as well as its transformation into ecclesiastical and residential use over time. Plate number “23” marks its place in Lauro’s monumental series.

Giacomo Lauro was a Roman engraver and antiquarian artist known for his publication Antiquae Urbis Splendor, which aimed to revive the visual splendour of ancient Roman architecture through stylised reconstructions. His prints were widely collected by early modern antiquarians and humanists and remain key visual documents in the reception of classical antiquity in the early Baroque period.
