4858 Giacomo Lauro (active Rome, 1584–1637) – Theater of Marcellus, Rome – Engraving (17th century)

This architectural engraving by Giacomo Lauro presents a reconstructed elevation of the Theatrum Marcelli (Theatre of Marcellus), one of ancient Rome’s most iconic imperial monuments. The engraving offers a stylised cross-section of the theatre’s concentric arcades and superimposed architectural orders, illustrating its former grandeur before medieval and Renaissance additions repurposed its structure. The Latin inscription below recounts the building’s history, while a numbered key at the top right identifies parts of the structure including the scena, tribunalia, and vomitoria.
Giacomo Lauro was an Italian engraver and antiquarian active in Rome during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. His most notable publication, Antiquae Urbis Splendor, documented the imagined reconstructions of ancient Roman architecture. These engravings were conceived not as precise archaeological records but as interpretive celebrations of the classical world, blending historical reverence with baroque theatricality.
