4857 Carl Gustav Jablonsky (1756–1787) – Set of Four Fungal Plates Featuring Crepidotus, Psalliota, Hypholoma, and Stropharia – Copperplate Engravings (Late 18th Century)

This set of four copperplate engravings presents a detailed taxonomic overview of mushroom genera Crepidotus, Psalliota, Hypholoma, and Stropharia. Each plate includes both macro and microscopic structures—gills, spores, stipes, caps—shown with scientific clarity and typographic precision. Notable species include Crepidotus mollis, Psalliota campestris, Hypholoma appendiculatum, and Stropharia squamosa, each illustrated with vivid natural colouring and sharply defined form. These engravings exemplify Enlightenment-era botanical standards and are notable for their balance of empirical detail and aesthetic restraint.
Carl Gustav Jablonsky (1756–1787) was a Prussian illustrator and early advocate of Linnaean taxonomy. As private secretary to Queen Elisabeth Christine of Prussia, he worked at the intersection of science and courtly culture. His illustrations of fungi, insects, and other natural subjects remain among the most sophisticated visual documents of late 18th-century natural history.
