This striking celestial illustration depicts the constellation Canis Major, the Great Dog, one of the most prominent star groups in the southern celestial hemisphere. The engraving shows the mythological dog leaping among stars, with Sirius—the brightest star in the night sky—featured prominently. Below, the figure of a dove holding an olive branch adds symbolic resonance. The background sky is rendered in deep black, with the stars individually hand-coloured in yellow and gold for enhanced contrast and legibility. Numbered “No. 51” at lower left, this plate was part of Charles Blunt’s didactic astronomical series aimed at general audiences and early students of celestial navigation.

Charles Blunt was a British science educator and publisher active in the early 19th century. His works, including The Beauty and Use of Astronomy, combined simplified astronomical knowledge with vivid visual tools. His constellation charts are now considered rare artefacts of early popular science and visual education.
