14 Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726) & Philippe Buache (1700–1773) – Map of Switzerland – Hand-Coloured Engraved Map (c.1780)

This finely engraved and hand-coloured map of Switzerland presents the cantons, topographical features, and administrative divisions with scientific precision characteristic of Enlightenment cartography. Originally designed by Guillaume Delisle and Philippe Buache, the map reflects the academic rigour of the French school and includes marginal notations, scales, and a legend explaining the symbols. This edition was published around 1780 by Jean-Claude Dezauche, who acquired the cartographic legacy of Delisle and Buache in that year and continued to issue their maps with updated engravings and detailed annotations.
Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726) was a leading French geographer and member of the Académie Royale des Sciences. Known for introducing scientific methods and astronomical observations into mapmaking, his work laid the foundation for modern cartography in France.
Philippe Buache (1700–1773), his successor and son-in-law, expanded upon Delisle’s scientific legacy and became the first official geographer to the King. He is renowned for developing thematic and physical maps, including early theories on underwater geography and continental structures.
