4815 Denis Diderot (1713–1784) – Set of 2 Copperplate Engravings of Surgical Instruments & Anatomy
This set of two original copperplate engravings comes from the medical section (Chirurgie) of Denis Diderot’s Encyclopédie, a foundational work of the Enlightenment. Plate 36 illustrates facial orthopedic supports, including chin braces and corrective straps used in maxillofacial treatment, shown in application on a seated patient. Plate 5 features a variety of surgical instruments—probes, sounds, and anatomical cross-sections—relating to urology and gynecology. These precise, labeled diagrams exemplify the Enlightenment’s drive to catalogue and disseminate practical scientific knowledge through visual clarity and empirical detail.
Denis Diderot (1713–1784) was a French philosopher, writer, and chief editor of the Encyclopédie, one of the most ambitious intellectual projects of the 18th century.
