This refined set of six antique botanical engravings by James Sowerby comes from his monumental publication English Botany, one of the most influential works in the history of British natural science. The featured species include Scandix anthiscus (Rough Chervil), Symphytum officinale (Common Comfrey), Hydrocharis morsus-ranae (Common Frog-bit), Polypodium lonchitis (Rough Alpine Polypody), Erysimum alliaria (Garlick Hedge-mustard), and Equisetum limosum (Smooth Horsetail). Each specimen is illustrated with remarkable anatomical precision and subtle hand-colouring, combining artistic delicacy with taxonomic clarity.

James Sowerby (1757–1822) was a pioneering English naturalist, engraver, and illustrator whose work helped popularize botanical science during the Enlightenment. English Botany, produced in collaboration with botanist James Edward Smith, comprised over 2,500 plates and remains a foundational reference in the study of British flora. These prints exemplify the transition from decorative to scientific botanical illustration in late 18th- and early 19th-century Europe.
