This lively engraving captures a Scheveningen fisherwoman walking barefoot along the coast with a large basket of fish balanced on her head. Behind her, a sailing boat arrives at shore, and a group of fishermen haul in their catch. The scene is accompanied by a Dutch monologue in verse, spoken in the voice of the woman herself, who humorously contrasts her hardworking, honest life with the comforts and vanity of city living. The emblem celebrates labor, humility, and the dignity of earning one's bread through effort and skill.

Jacob Cats often used regional types and common figures to express moral truths in relatable, down-to-earth ways. This image, full of movement and coastal atmosphere, illustrates his admiration for virtue grounded in simplicity. Adriaen van de Venne’s animated composition brings out the character of the fisherwoman, while Jan Swelinck’s engraving preserves every detail of her posture, expression, and environment.
