This intimate allegorical engraving shows Venus seated beside two swans, observing a young widow approached by winged Cupids bearing arrows and branches. Set in a lush garden landscape, the scene alludes to the goddess instructing her son Cupid in matters of human love. The widow, modestly reclined in a shaded grove, becomes the focal point of discussion: whether she should love again, and under what circumstances. The surrounding Dutch verse reflects on appropriate courtship and the moral considerations of remarriage, especially for women.

Jacob Cats often addressed social roles and expectations in his emblem books, particularly those relating to courtship, widowhood, and chastity. This image, gentle in tone and rich in symbolism, echoes those themes. Adriaen van de Venne contributes a graceful, classical setting, while Jan Swelinck engraves the scene with balanced elegance and clarity.
