This haunting emblem from the series Kunst voor Kracht depicts a skeletal figure of Death riding on the back of a crocodile as it emerges from a riverbank. The Latin motto “Nescit habere modum” (“He does not know moderation”) and the Dutch captions “Van groot tot grooter” (“From great to greater”) and “Noyt groot genoegh” (“Never great enough”) underscore the theme of insatiable ambition. The image personifies greed and excess as ultimately destructive forces, linking worldly striving to inevitable death. The crocodile, associated with deceit and appetite, serves as the vehicle for ruin.

Jacob Cats was one of the most influential moralists of the Dutch Golden Age, using allegory and verse to convey ethical and religious teachings. His texts were brought to life through the imaginative imagery of Adriaen van de Venne and the sharp engravings of Jan Swelinck, whose technical precision reinforced the emblematic power of each composition.
