This satirical emblem from Kunst voor Kracht depicts a crude monkey attempting to imitate virtue by appearing pious and restrained, while in the background, other figures scramble for falling coins. The Latin motto Furentem quid delubra juvant (“What use are temples to a madman?”) suggests that outward shows of morality or devotion are futile when inner nature remains uncorrected. The accompanying Dutch verse reinforces the idea that without genuine moral transformation, even the best intentions fall back into old vice. The scene critiques hypocrisy and superficial virtue, comparing the sinner to a baboon that, though dressed and trained, remains unchanged at heart.

Jacob Cats was a prominent moralist whose emblem books distilled complex ethical messages into accessible allegories. The visuals by Adriaen van de Venne sharpened the satire with vivid imagery, while Jan Swelinck’s engravings provided refined clarity, contributing to the enduring popularity of the series throughout the Dutch Republic.
