4583 Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745–1824) – Mulino da Zucchero – Copperplate Engraving from Il Gazettiere Americano (1763)

This 18th-century copperplate engraving titled Mulino da Zucchero shows a large sugar mill operated by draft animals. The structure is roofed with a radial timber frame to protect the workers and machinery from tropical weather. In the center, rollers and gears process raw sugarcane, while a legend in the upper cartouche explains each labeled element of the mechanical and architectural design. The depiction reflects the importance of sugar production in colonial economies and the mechanization of agriculture.
Giovanni Maria Cassini was an Italian engraver and cartographer known for his scientific and geographical illustrations. He contributed to the Italian edition of The American Gazetteer, published in Livorno by Marco Coltellini in 1763.
