44 Petrus Kaerius (1571–1646) – Map of the Turkish Empire / Turcici Imperii Imago – Copperplate Engraving – 1634
This detailed copperplate map titled Turcici Imperii Imago presents the vast reach of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire during the early 17th century, stretching from the Balkans and North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and the Caspian Sea. The map includes regions such as Asia Minor, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Arabia Felix, and parts of the eastern Mediterranean. Cities, rivers, mountains, and seas are labeled in Latin, and the coastlines are carefully engraved with precision characteristic of Dutch cartography of the period.
The map was engraved by Petrus Kaerius (the Latinized name of Pieter van den Keere) and appeared in the 1634 edition of Atlas Minor Gerardi Mercatoris, published in Amsterdam by Johannes Janssonius. This edition was based on Mercator’s and Hondius’s pioneering work in atlas cartography, intended for a wider audience in a more compact format. The cartouche and compass rose are elegantly designed, and the title "Turcici Imperii Imago" appears within a scrollwork frame at the bottom left.
Petrus Kaerius was a prominent Flemish engraver and cartographer active in Amsterdam, known for his collaboration with leading Dutch publishers such as Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Janssonius. His engraving style was clear and decorative, contributing to some of the finest atlases of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography.
