4557 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Botanical Study of Euphorbia with Flowers and Spines – Hand-Coloured Mezzotint and Line Engraving – c.1730s
This finely hand-coloured engraving presents two varieties of Euphorbia: Euphorbium caule squamoso and Euphorbium cum affine spinis viridioribus armato. The upper section of the plate features a vibrant flowering succulent with elongated green branches and delicate pink blossoms. In contrast, the lower plant displays a bulbous, textured stem with clustered segments and prominent thorns, rendered in earthy greens and ochres. The detailed botanical drawing is accompanied by fine linework and Latin annotations describing their taxonomic distinctions.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) was a German apothecary and botanist who published the influential Phytanthoza Iconographia, a groundbreaking botanical compendium of over 1,000 plates depicting more than 4,000 plant species. The work pioneered a combination of mezzotint and line engraving, allowing for rich tonal variation and precision. Many plates, including this one, were based on original drawings by Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770), marking his debut in botanical illustration. Weinmann's vision fused scientific utility with decorative artistry, making his prints highly desirable to both botanists and collectors.
