This vibrant botanical engraving depicts three varieties of Euphorbia: Euphorbium antiquorum quadrangulare, Euphorbium seu rariora Calle dicta, and Euphorbium septorum squamosum. Rendered with meticulous detail, the print showcases the unique structures of these succulents — from the angular, spiked stalks of the quadrangular species to the leafy, paddle-like form of the rare variety, and the clustered, bead-like growths of the third. Each plant is labelled and precisely illustrated in delicate shades of green with hand-applied watercolour, highlighting their horticultural features with scientific clarity and visual elegance.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) was a German apothecary and botanist whose monumental work Phytanthoza Iconographia comprised over 1,000 plates documenting more than 4,000 plant species. Notable for its pioneering use of mezzotint combined with line engraving and hand-colouring, this publication bridged the gap between scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. Many plates were based on early drawings by the celebrated botanical illustrator Georg Dionysius Ehret, marking his first published works.
