6 Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) – Map of the Kingdom of Hungary / Hungaria Regnum ad Eminentiss: Titulum – Hand-Coloured Copperplate Engraving – Early 18th Century

This finely detailed and hand-coloured map titled Hungaria ad Eminentiss: Titulum... shows the Kingdom of Hungary during the early 18th century. The political boundaries of Hungary and its neighboring territories are outlined in colour, with clear demarcations between counties (comitatus), rivers, towns, and mountainous regions. A richly engraved allegorical cartouche in the upper left corner includes personifications of classical figures, possibly representing abundance and victory, seated beside military trophies and coats of arms. The cartouche also references the map’s dedication to high-ranking ecclesiastical authority.
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725), based in Nuremberg, was one of the leading engravers and publishers of his time. His work combined cartographic accuracy with baroque ornamentation and educational purpose. His maps of Hungary were especially valued for their political relevance following the Habsburg reconquest of the region from the Ottoman Empire and were widely used in scholarly and administrative contexts.
