50 Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) – Armorial Chart of the European Empires and Kingdoms – Hand-Coloured Copperplate Engraving – Early 18th Century
This large hand-coloured copperplate engraving titled Erste Wappen-Charte derer Europaeischen Kaiserthümer und Königreiche mit beygefügter historischer Erklärung presents the coats of arms of major European empires and kingdoms, accompanied by extensive heraldic and historical descriptions in German. The arms of the Holy Roman Empire, France, England, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, and Denmark are displayed in elaborately decorated cartouches. Several of the arms are highlighted with fine hand-colouring, particularly the shields of Denmark, Hungary, and the Holy Roman Empire. The chart is arranged in six segments, each pairing a coat of arms with detailed text about the origin, symbolism, and lineage of each realm.
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) was a German engraver, publisher, and cartographer active in Nuremberg. He is known for his richly engraved maps, city views, and genealogical plates, which combined detailed visual elements with historical explanation. His heraldic charts and imperial tables were widely used across Central Europe in both noble households and educational settings. This engraving exemplifies the Baroque synthesis of visual grandeur and scholarly narrative.
