This detailed copperplate engraving titled Birds, Tab. IV presents sixteen ornithological specimens, each precisely drawn and labeled with both vernacular and scientific names. Species depicted include the Rose-Coloured Ouzell, Horn Owl, Red Sparrow, Bird of Paradise, Passer Indicus, Charadrius, Penguin, Diver, Recurvirostra, Brent Goose, Clangula Duck, Red Shank, Roller, and Chatterer. The illustrations emphasize key morphological traits such as beaks, plumage, and posture. Each figure is numbered for reference to accompanying text in the Cyclopaedia.
Ephraim Chambers (c.1680–1740) laid the groundwork for encyclopedic science publishing in Britain with his original Cyclopaedia. Abraham Rees (1743–1825) expanded Chambers’ work into a monumental illustrated encyclopedia, issuing hundreds of plates on zoology, anatomy, and mechanics. Their collaborative legacy shaped Enlightenment science education and helped standardize natural history engraving in Britain.
