4520 Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677) – Forty-One Insects Including Butterflies, Moths, Beetles and Caterpillars – Engraving (1646)

This intricate engraving presents forty-one insects, including butterflies, moths, caterpillars, beetles, and a snail, arranged in neat rows. The delicate linework and precise symmetry reflect scientific curiosity as well as aesthetic refinement. This plate is one of Hollar’s most admired contributions to early natural history illustration.
Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677) was a Bohemian-born engraver who worked across Europe, most notably in England. He produced over 2,700 prints, ranging from cityscapes and portraits to zoological and botanical studies. His natural history engravings are considered groundbreaking for their realism and clarity.
