164 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Caprifolium, Acacia & Curcuma – Hand-Coloured Copper Engraving (c.1737–1745)
This finely detailed folio engraving features an elegant array of botanical species including Caprifolium (honeysuckle), Curcuma longa (turmeric), and Acacia varieties (Caprifolium dentatum, Caprifolium punctis). The plate combines the rhizome and inflorescence of Curcuma, the rounded golden blossoms and seed pods of Acacia, and slender needle-like foliage. Each plant is labelled with classical Latin inscriptions, and the vibrant hand-colouring brings clarity to their unique structures. This engraving is plate number 1030 from Phytanthoza Iconographia, one of the most visually ambitious and scientifically grounded botanical works of the 18th century.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose Phytanthoza Iconographia marked a breakthrough in botanical illustration through the use of mezzotint and hand-colouring. Many plates were drawn or influenced by Georg Dionysius Ehret, who would go on to revolutionize botanical art with his refined and lifelike compositions. Together, their work laid the foundation for modern botanical representation.
