160 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) & Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770) – Nicotiana Tabacum & Nigella Species – Hand-Coloured Copper Engraving (c.1737–1745)

This hand-painted folio botanical engraving comes from Phytanthoza Iconographia, the monumental multi-volume work by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, published in Regensburg between 1737 and 1745. The plate, numbered 757, features a vivid rendering of Nicotiana Tabacum (common tobacco) alongside multiple flowering varieties of Nigella (love-in-a-mist), including white and striking blue blossoms. The image is characterized by delicate linework, vibrant watercolour application, and scientific clarity—hallmarks of the early botanical style developed by Georg Dionysius Ehret, one of the most celebrated botanical artists of the 18th century.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose Phytanthoza Iconographia marked a breakthrough in botanical illustration through the use of mezzotint and hand-colouring. Many plates were drawn or influenced by Georg Dionysius Ehret, who would go on to revolutionize botanical art with his refined and lifelike compositions. Together, their work laid the foundation for modern botanical representation.
