90 Ferdinand Piloty d. Ä. (1786–1844) – Die Verdammten (The Damned) – Chalk Lithograph in Brown (1814)

This intense lithograph titled Die Verdammten (The Damned), attributed to Ferdinand Piloty the Elder, reproduces the dramatic lower center of Peter Paul Rubens’s Last Judgment. The composition features a mass of intertwined, muscular male figures falling into damnation—rendered in powerful chiaroscuro and expressive anatomical detail. Executed in reddish-brown chalk lithography, the print evokes both the terror and beauty of divine judgment, preserving Rubens’s Baroque energy while translating it into the lithographic medium.
Ferdinand Piloty the Elder was a pioneering German lithographer active in Munich during the early 19th century. Trained as a painter, he became one of the foremost masters of reproductive lithography, collaborating with artists such as Johann Nepomuk Strixner. Piloty played a crucial role in developing the genre of academic lithographic reproduction and contributed significantly to the Oeuvres Lithographiques series, which disseminated great European artworks to wider audiences.
