46 Willem Baudartius (1565–1640) – Map of the Military Campaign of Prince Maurits through Brabant – Engraving from Les guerres de Nassau (1616)

This original 17th-century engraving illustrates the campaign route of Prince Maurits of Nassau and the army of the States General through Brabant between 7 June and 18 July 1602, during the Eighty Years' War. The detailed composition includes a military map and a dynamic scene of battlefield movements, fortifications, and formations, accompanied by inset cartouches and annotations in Dutch. The print was published in Amsterdam in 1616 as part of Les guerres de Nassau, a major visual chronicle of the early decades of the Dutch Revolt, written from a Contra-Remonstrant point of view. The work incorporates elements from Hogenberg’s Geschichtsblätter and Orlers' chronicles, along with original plates.
Willem Baudartius (1565–1640) was a Flemish-born theologian, writer, and translator. Forced into exile during the religious conflicts of the 16th century, he eventually settled in the Northern Netherlands and became a prominent figure in the Dutch Reformed Church. He contributed to the Statenvertaling (official Dutch Bible translation) and was a key chronicler of the Dutch struggle for independence. The engravings in his work were created by several artists, including Simon Wynhoutsz. Frisius (1580–1629), a renowned Dutch engraver of historical and military scenes.
