This engraving reproduces the famous Dendera Zodiac, a sculpted astronomical bas-relief from the ceiling of a chapel dedicated to Osiris in the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, Egypt. The structure was built during the reign of the last Ptolemies and Emperor Augustus (1st century BC). The circular planisphere contains zodiac signs, including Taurus (the bull) and Libra (the scales), and is thought to represent an early celestial chart, possibly influencing later astronomical systems. The plate was published in 1829 in Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte by French archaeologist Dominique Vivant Denon, who documented the zodiac during Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition in 1802.

Dominique Vivant Denon (1747–1825) was a French archaeologist, artist, and diplomat. He accompanied Napoleon's 1798 expedition to Egypt and became instrumental in recording and publishing its discoveries. His illustrated travel account, Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, played a key role in launching European Egyptomania and remains one of the foundational works of modern Egyptology.
