This detailed chart depicts the West Coast of Africa from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Gulf of Guinea, including Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone, the Gold Coast, and the Bight of Benin. The map shows numerous place names, coastal features, and navigational details, such as soundings and compass roses. The interior regions are marked with ethnographic labels like “Zahra or Desert of Barbary,” “Bambouk,” and “Mandinga.” This chart was engraved for Malham’s Naval Gazetteer and published in London in 1795 by Allen & William Faden, Geographer to the King.

John Allen was a British engraver active in the late 18th century, known for producing maps and charts for commercial and educational atlases. His contributions to maritime cartography were especially notable, with works frequently included in naval publications intended for practical use by seafarers.
