21 Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) – Map of the South Polar Region / Facies Poli Antarctici – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving (Early 18th Century)

This early polar projection map presents one of the earliest European cartographic interpretations of the Antarctic region. It outlines the southern oceans and coasts with a speculative rendering of “Terra Incognita Australis” encircling the pole. The depiction is based on the most recent travel reports of the time, as claimed in the title. The map includes fragments of Australia, New Zealand, and the southern tips of South America and Africa. The title is elegantly placed in Latin in the upper quadrants of the composition.
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) was a German engraver, publisher, and bookseller based in Nuremberg.
