7 Samuel von Pufendorf (1632–1694) & Erik Dahlbergh – Siege View of the Town of Greifswald from De rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sveciae Regis – Engraving (c.1700)

This detailed copper engraving shows the Swedish siege of the fortified town of Greifswald, part of the duchy of Pomerania. The town is depicted with surrounding gardens and defensive lines, while Swedish battalions and artillery positions encircle it. A decorative cartouche in the lower right corner contains a legend identifying key military positions and buildings. The print comes from De rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sveciae Regis, the official royal chronicle of King Charles X Gustav of Sweden, published around 1700.
Samuel von Pufendorf (1632–1694) was a German jurist and historian, author of influential works on natural law and politics. He served as royal historiographer to the Swedish court and composed the official chronicle of Charles X Gustav. The engravings were based on original drawings by Erik Dahlbergh (1625–1703), a Swedish military engineer and artist whose topographic precision helped shape Sweden’s visual and political identity in the late 17th century.
