This allegorical copperplate frontispiece was created for the first edition of L’Histoire naturelle éclaircie dans deux de ses parties principales, la lithologie et la conchyliologie, published in Paris in 1742 by De Bure l’Aîné. The composition presents two sea deities reclining among an abundance of shells, coral, and marine elements, introducing the volume’s study of stones and shells. The monumental shell at center bears the title inscription, while an eagle and architectural fragments evoke the grandeur and scope of Enlightenment science.

Designed by François Boucher and engraved by Quentin Pierre Chedel, the image represents the merging of natural science with Rococo aesthetics and is emblematic of the period’s approach to scientific illustration.
