72 Jan Goeree (1670–1731) – The Statues of Castor and Pollux with Horses – Engraving (Early 18th Century)

This striking architectural engraving by Jan Goeree features the monumental statues of Castor and Pollux, the Dioscuri, each standing beside a rearing horse. These celebrated sculptures, traditionally attributed to Phidias and Praxiteles, are shown here on pedestals with elaborate Latin inscriptions referencing Alexander the Great, Pope Sixtus V, and the antiquarian legacy of classical Rome.
A decorative scroll flanked by papal insignia and Latin script further emphasizes the scholarly and archaeological nature of the composition. The engraving reflects the fascination of the Baroque and early Enlightenment period with Roman antiquities and the symbolic grandeur of imperial statuary. Goeree’s masterful use of line and volume showcases the muscular idealism of the figures and the dynamism of the horses.
