This finely executed 17th-century engraving depicts the fortified outpost of Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, a small rocky peninsula on the Moroccan coast under Spanish control. The view captures the dramatic topography of the rock, its dense military architecture with watchtowers and battlements, and the naval presence in the surrounding waters. Figures on the foreground shore and various sailing vessels convey the strategic maritime importance of the site. The work is signed “I. Peeters excudit” and was etched by Gaspar Bouttats, a Flemish engraver active in Antwerp. The engraving was published around 1690 as part of Jacobus Peeters’ atlas titled Sacr. Caes. Mati. Leopoldo..., a visual chronicle of cities and fortresses involved in the late 17th-century Habsburg-Ottoman conflicts, as well as Mediterranean holdings.

Gaspar Bouttats (1640–1695) was a Flemish engraver based in Antwerp and part of a prolific family of printmakers. He is known for his topographical and historical views, often working in collaboration with prominent publishers such as Jacobus Peeters. His works were widely circulated in atlases and print series documenting major political and military events in Europe. Bouttats' detailed and dynamic engravings played a role in shaping visual knowledge of distant places during the early modern period.
