2 Unknown – Antiphonary Leaf – Feast of the Expectation of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Manuscript on Vellum (1600s, Italy)

This double-sided antiphonary leaf features Latin liturgical chant written in Gothic script, with neumatic square notation on a four-line red staff. The rubric in the upper right corner, In festo expectationis b. marie v., identifies the chants as part of the celebration for the Feast of the Expectation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Such feasts were observed with special reverence in the Catholic liturgical calendar, particularly in late Advent.
The manuscript is richly decorated with initials in red and black, including a large historiated "B" adorned with baroque pen flourishes. These stylistic elements, along with the precise notation and formal script, point to an Italian origin from the 17th century. Designed for choral use, the large format allowed the text and music to be seen by multiple singers during the Divine Office.
