54 Jacob Cats (1577–1660), Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne (1589–1662) – Gront-Houwelick: Adam en Eva – Engraving from Houwelick (Rotterdam, Pieter van Waesberge, 1655)

This emblematic page is taken from the opening section of Jacob Cats’s seminal moral and poetic work Houwelick, titled “Gront-Houwelick,” which translates to “The Foundation of Marriage.” The engraving vividly depicts the biblical wedding of Adam and Eve, surrounded by animals in an idyllic Garden of Eden, with the divine name (יהוה) radiating light from above. The surrounding Dutch verse describes the sanctity of the first marriage and frames the union of man and woman as ordained by God — serving as a moral and theological model for all future unions.
Jacob Cats (1577–1660), one of the most influential authors of the Dutch Golden Age, combined legal insight, biblical morality, and popular poetry in emblem books like Houwelick, promoting domestic virtue and godly living. His collaborator, Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne, provided expressive and symbolically rich engravings that became integral to the cultural literacy of 17th-century Dutch households. This edition was printed in Rotterdam by Pieter van Waesberge in 1655 and widely distributed in the Dutch Republic.
