87 Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1749–1834) – Continuation de la descente des Monts Fjällen – Aquatint Engraving from Voyage Pittoresque à travers la Suède (c.1802)

This aquatint engraving titled Continuation de la descente des Monts Fjällen depicts a dramatic mountainous landscape in northern Sweden, part of the Scandinavian mountain chain known as the Fjällen. A group of travelers is shown descending through a steep snow-covered slope, surrounded by rugged cliffs and glacial formations. The scene emphasizes both the harshness and the sublime beauty of Swedish nature as encountered during early scientific and geographic expeditions. This plate (Pl. XXXIX) was issued as part of Voyage Pittoresque à travers la Suède, a monumental travel and topographical work overseen by Swedish statesman and military officer Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand, published in the early 1800s. The engraving was drawn and aquatinted by Elias Martin and Johan Frederik Martin, key figures of the Swedish Romantic landscape tradition.
Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1749–1834) was a Swedish count, military commander, and artist known for his political influence and cultural patronage during the Gustavian era.
