This finely detailed military map, titled Plan de la Défense du Pont du Var, illustrates the positions and fortifications of the French army under the command of General Suchet in May 1800 during the War of the Second Coalition. It depicts the Mediterranean coastline, the Var River, and key strategic locations around Nice and Saint-Laurent-du-Var. The map includes a legend identifying French and Austrian positions, artillery placements, bridges, batteries, and routes,

emphasizing the defensive structure along the Var. The engraving is based on the original field plan owned by Marshal Suchet and executed by Ambroise Tardieu.

Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) was a French cartographer and engraver known for his historical and scientific maps. He was the nephew of Pierre François Tardieu and inherited the family's precision in engraving. Tardieu worked on a wide range of atlases and military documents during the Napoleonic era and throughout the Restoration, making significant contributions to the cartographic documentation of French military campaigns.
