48 Boetius Adams Bolswert (c.1580–1633) – Sanctus Frontonius – Engraving (1619)

This original early 17th-century engraving by Boetius Adams Bolswert presents Saint Frontonius in a posture of devout supplication. Clad in monastic robes with a crucifix at his side and a skull resting on a book, symbols of penitence and contemplation, the saint looks upward in spiritual ecstasy. The setting, with rugged trees and shadowed terrain, evokes the wilderness retreat of a hermit. Numbered “16.” and titled “Sanctus Frontonius,” this work belongs to a devotional series portraying saints in moments of solitude and prayer. The red collector’s stamp in the corner denotes provenance from a historic European print collection.
Boetius Adams Bolswert (c.1580–1633) was one of the most accomplished Flemish engravers of the Baroque era. Best known for his collaborations with Peter Paul Rubens, Bolswert’s engravings were celebrated for their refined technique, dramatic contrast, and emotional depth. His religious prints formed an important part of devotional life and visual culture in 17th-century Europe.
