This original engraving by Boetius Adams Bolswert depicts Saint Sylvia, mother of Pope Gregory the Great, in a devotional posture holding a rosary and a large cross. Dressed in modest garments with a head covering, she gazes upward in spiritual contemplation. The fine crosshatching and delicate lines highlight the folds of her robe, the expression of serenity and devotion on her face, and the texture of the surrounding landscape. Marked “24.” and titled “Sancta Sylvia,” the work forms part of a numbered series of devotional portraits of saints, often produced for private religious reflection. A red collector’s stamp is visible in the lower margin.

Boetius Adams Bolswert (c.1580–1633) was a masterful Flemish engraver renowned for his religious prints and his collaboration with Peter Paul Rubens. His engravings are notable for their technical excellence, expressive detail, and deep chiaroscuro. Bolswert played a vital role in disseminating religious iconography during the Baroque period, particularly through series of saint portraits such as this.
