46 Boetius Adams Bolswert (c.1580–1633) – Sanctus Bonosus – Engraving (1619)

This original early 17th-century engraving by Boetius Adams Bolswert depicts Saint Bonosus in a moment of devotional prayer, kneeling in a dramatic landscape with hands clasped and eyes uplifted. The finely engraved lines capture the folds of his robe, the expressive intensity of his face, and the deep textures of the surrounding foliage and sky. Numbered “24.” and titled “Sanctus Bonosus” at the base, the print was part of a larger devotional series, likely illustrating saints or hermits. The red collector’s stamp in the lower corner indicates its past inclusion in a significant European print collection.
Boetius Adams Bolswert (c.1580–1633) was a Flemish engraver and one of the most celebrated printmakers of the early Baroque period. He is best known for his close collaboration with Peter Paul Rubens, translating the master’s dynamic paintings into detailed engravings. Bolswert's technical precision, atmospheric depth, and emotional resonance set a high standard for religious and allegorical engraving in the 17th century.
