This impressive 18th-century bird's-eye perspective engraving presents the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and the densely constructed residential quarters of the city. The title in Dutch at the bottom reads: Afbeelding en Gezicht van alle de Gebouwen des Tempels, als ook van de daarom leggende Huizen, aan het zuider gedeelte van de Stad, translating to “Depiction and View of all the Buildings of the Temple, as well as the surrounding houses on the southern part of the city.” The architectural rendering emphasizes the monumental staircases, gates, fortifications, and urban density of historic Jerusalem. This type of imaginary reconstruction was typical of European biblical cartography and historical illustrations in the 18th century.
Andries Dirksz. de Putte was an 18th-century Dutch engraver and cartographer whose works often focused on religious history, Jerusalem, and monumental reconstructions.
