18 Erhard after Dufour – Map of Yedo Bay and Travel Routes in California / Baie de Yeddo – Itinéraire en Californie – Hand-Colored Lithograph (c.1870s)

This double map features two distinct regions of global significance in the 19th century. The upper map, Baie de Yeddo, presents an early French depiction of Tokyo Bay (then Yedo Bay), including Yokohama and the surrounding provinces of Musashi and Iwaki. Insets show city plans of Yeddo and Yokohama. The lower map, Itinéraire en Californie, details travel and communication routes through California and Nevada, including gold mining regions, towns, and rail lines, with San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles prominently marked. Both maps are color lithographs engraved by Erhard and published in Paris by Lamé Éditeur, based on Dufour’s atlas designs.
Erhard was a skilled 19th-century French engraver who contributed to a range of historical and geographic publications, including maps produced for educational and diplomatic audiences. His work is distinguished by clear linework and fine typographic control.
