57 Daniel Meisner (1585–1625) – Title Page – Libellus Novus Politicus Emblematibus Civitatum Pars Sexta – Engraved Print (1638)

This engraved title page from Libellus Novus Politicus Emblematibus Civitatum, Part VI, was published in Frankfurt by Paulus Fürst in 1638. It features a central cartouche with elaborate baroque lettering, surrounded by six allegorical medallions representing virtues, humors, and states of mind: Sanguineus, Melancholicus, Phlegmaticus, Cholericus, along with emblems such as Silencio et spe fortitudo (“Strength in silence and hope”) and Nec sorte nec fato (“Neither by fate nor chance”). The complex iconography reflects the emblematic culture of the early Baroque and the moralizing tradition of the time.
Daniel Meisner (1585–1625) was a Bohemian poet and publisher best known for the emblem book Thesaurus Philo-Politicus, expanded posthumously as Libellus Novus Politicus. Combining city views with Latin mottoes and allegorical figures, his work exemplifies the merging of visual rhetoric and civic ideology in 17th-century print culture.
