This large aquatint engraving titled Embouchure du Fleuve de Torneå depicts the wide estuary of the Torne River as it flows into the Gulf of Bothnia, near the border between modern-day Sweden and Finland. The view is framed by dense northern forests and dotted with sailing vessels along the calm waters, under a dramatic northern sky. The image captures the grandeur and isolation of Lapland’s coastal landscape as seen during Skjöldebrand’s 1800 expedition. This plate was published in his celebrated work Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord.

Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) was a Swedish military officer, politician, and artist. Best known for his travels and artistic documentation of Northern Europe, he combined visual observation with Enlightenment ideals of exploration and ethnographic interest. His illustrated travel accounts remain among the most important early depictions of the culture and landscapes of Scandinavia and Finland.
