85 Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) – Kyro River and Interior of Finnish House – Aquatint Engraving by M. R. Heland (1802)

This aquatint engraving from 1802 presents two views of Finland on a single plate, drawn by Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand and engraved by M. R. Heland. The left scene, Rivière de Kyro, shows a frozen river landscape with a mill, sledges pulled by horses, and rolling snow-covered hills beneath a dramatic sky. The right scene, Porte. Habitation de Finois, depicts the interior of a traditional Finnish log house, with villagers gathered around a fire, tools on the walls, and smoke curling toward the rafters. This engraving was published as part of Skjöldebrand’s monumental work Voyage pittoresque au Cap Nord.
Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757–1834) was a Swedish military officer, politician, and artist. Best known for his travels and artistic documentation of Northern Europe, he combined visual observation with Enlightenment ideals of exploration and ethnographic interest. His illustrated travel accounts remain among the most important early depictions of the culture and landscapes of Scandinavia and Finland.
