10 Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) – Map of Lower and Upper Egypt / Carte de la Basse Égypte et Carte de la Haute Égypte – Engraved Map (Mid-18th Century)

This large and finely detailed engraved map presents both Lower and Upper Egypt, as produced by Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville based on ancient and modern geographic sources. The main section, titled Carte de la Basse Égypte, depicts the Nile Delta with surrounding cities and territories stretching to the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. The bottom panel, Carte de la Haute Égypte, charts the course of the Nile from the south in a linear format. The map was designed for historical and scholarly purposes and reflects Enlightenment cartographic precision. D’Anville’s characteristic approach integrates topographic realism with classical scholarship.
Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) was one of the most influential French geographers of the 18th century. Known for his rigor and accuracy, he rejected speculative geography and based his work on ancient texts and first-hand accounts. He produced some of the most authoritative maps of Asia, Africa, and the ancient world, many of which remained standard for decades. D’Anville’s maps were highly regarded by both scholars and statesmen, and he served as royal geographer to the King of France.
