3 Giovanni Battista Falda (1643–1678) – Map of Old and New Rome / Novissima et Accuratissima Romae Veteris et Novae Tabula – Copperplate Engraving (Late 17th Century)

This elaborate topographical map titled Novissima et Accuratissima Romae Veteris et Novae Tabula was created by Giovanni Battista Falda and presents a highly detailed plan of both ancient and contemporary Rome. The Latin and Dutch title cartouches describe it as the “Most New and Accurate Map of Old and New Rome,” with detailed references to churches, monasteries, and other landmarks, clearly indexed in side panels. The layout reflects the papal city's religious, architectural, and civic topography during the Baroque period. Rich allegorical engravings frame the map, depicting personifications of justice, faith, and Roman authority. The map was published in Rome and later included in works distributed by François Halma in the Netherlands.
Giovanni Battista Falda (1643–1678) was an Italian engraver and architect known for his views of Rome and Vatican architecture. A pupil of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Falda became a prominent figure in Roman cartography and topographical art, producing detailed engravings that served both artistic and documentary purposes. His works are among the most valuable visual records of 17th-century Rome. He collaborated with the publisher Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi, whose workshop helped circulate Falda’s maps across Europe.
