77 Charles Theodore Middleton – Habits of the Groenlanders – Copperplate Engraving (1778)

This copperplate engraving, created for Charles Theodore Middleton’s A Complete System of Geography, depicts the traditional clothing and lifestyle of the Greenlandic Inuit (Groenlanders) as imagined by European observers in the 18th century. Framed within an ornate architectural cartouche, the central scene shows two figures dressed in fur-lined garments, with a background of towering ice cliffs, kayaks, and figures hunting or fishing. The highly stylized setting reflects Enlightenment Europe's fascination with remote indigenous cultures and their adaptation to harsh Arctic climates.
This engraving is part of a broader colonial-era tradition of visual ethnography, in which artists and publishers sought to represent the "exotic" peoples of the world for educational and imperial audiences. Though often romanticized or inaccurate, such images played a major role in shaping European perceptions of non-Western societies.
