This copperplate engraving by Gabriel Bodenehr the Elder presents the fortified town of Marsal in Lorraine, located on the Seille River about five miles from Nancy. The image shows the town’s impressive bastioned fortifications, set within a marshy plain labeled "Seelth Morast," with a bridge leading to the main gate. The descriptive caption to the left highlights the strategic and defensive strength of the site, attributed both to the surrounding swampland and the constructed military works. Marsal, historically important for its salt production, belonged to the Kingdom of France during this period.

Gabriel Bodenehr the Elder (1664–1758) was a German engraver and cartographer from Augsburg, known for his finely detailed prints of European cities and fortifications, often produced for atlases and collections of cityscapes.
